So, a few days ago Google released a new version of ChromeOS. It looks more to an OS now than a browser. It has desktop apps and background image.

I was curios to run it long time ago, so i decided it’s time to give it a try. I had no available USB stick, i gotta install it on USB, so i used VirtualBox to create an virtual machine.

What you need to install ChromeOS in a virtual machine:

- VirtualBox, download from
- a ChromeOS image for VirtualBox, you can download the archive from and extract it

After you install VirtualBox, create a new machine:

Click next

Choose a name for virtual machine, for operating system select Linux and Ubuntu version

Select amount of RAM. I used 1GB, select more if you have 4GB or more instaled in your computer

Select “Use existing hard disk” and browse for ChomeOS image you previously downloaded

Select create

Right click on the created machine and go to Settings >System and in Processor tab check Extended feature: Enable PAE/NX

Now start the machine. You might not be able to use the mouse in the first screen, use tab and enter to navigate and select continue. Next, ChomeOS will search for updates, press escape to skip that step.

You will be prompted to login with your Google account. If you don’t have one, you can make an account, or you can login as Guest.

Here are some screenshots with Guest account:

If you log in, and have an profile set up, you can use your profile photo. After login all your synchronized data from other computers will be installed. I got all my bookmarks, extensions and webapps.
